Selecting the right wedding photographer for you.
Finding the right vendors for your wedding is a challenge. However, settling on the right photographer is usually the hardest decision an engaged couple will make. That's because when it comes to the wedding photos, you don't really know what you're getting until after the fact. While you can smell the flowers and taste the wedding cake before the big day, when it comes to the photos, you simply have to trust that your photographer will do a good job. That's a lot of trust to put in someone.
In order to help you feel more comfortable about this big decision, Captura Camera has put together a list of things you should consider when selection your engagement and wedding photographer. These are the things we go over with clients who reach out to us.
1) What is their photography style?
Our style at Captura Camera is best described as photojournalistic, influenced by fine-art and fashion photography. The truth is, that style is not for everyone, and that's ok. And while we do our best to accommodate exactly what each couple is looking for, it's important to look at a photographers portfolio to see if their visual style best represents you.
2) How many other events will they photograph that weekend?
Some studios photograph multiple weddings each weekend. And that's great for them. But not Captura Camera, and we are upfront about this with our clients. We don't send a second shooter to your wedding. When you hire us, you're hiring Randy Smith (owner and lead photographer). You should always confirm this with your wedding photographer. Because while the studio you contact might have a great portfolio, if you don't know which images correspond to the person photographing your wedding, you may be in for a big surprise when you receive your images.
3) How long after the event will the photos be ready?
Studios that do not do any post production or color correction may try to entice you by saying your photos will be ready immediately, or even the next day. However, at Captura Camera we massage each image you receive to bring out their fullest potential. Each photograph is edited to give it our signature style. That's not to say our way is the only way to do things, but you need to know what to expect from your photographer. We return our images to clients within 7 business days.
4) Ask About Your Rights.
Most wedding photography contracts stipulate that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, and that they can be used for promotional purposes. However, many studios also sneak in clauses that only allow couples to share watermarked images over social media. As well, it is not uncommon these days for photographers to limit a clients right to print the images themselves, forcing couples to pay the studio for prints.
Again, there is nothing wrong with any of this if the couple is aware of what they're getting into, but often, newlyweds misunderstand these clauses in their contract. However, at Captura Camera, not only do we not watermark our images (it keeps them looking clean), you are free to share and print your photos as much as you wish. We take great pride in this business decision, and we are very clear and upfront when talking to new clients about what we offer.
